Domestic student entry criteria
Applicants must meet both the general admission requirements and the additional requirements for flight training before their enrolment can be approved.
General entry criteria
To receive approval to enrol in the qualification, applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old on the planned course commencement date;
- meet the academic entry requirement by either:
- completing Australian senior secondary school, or an equivalent or higher qualification; or
- successfully completing the prescribed Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment;
- have a native or advanced level of English; and
- if applying for a VET Student Loan, provide evidence that they meet the applicable citizenship and residency eligibility requirements.
Flight training entry criteria
Applicants must also satisfy Flight One’s flight-training admission requirements by:
- successfully completing the Symbiotics ADAPT pilot aptitude assessment;
- undertaking an acceptable trial flight lesson, where feasible;
- successfully completing a discussion-style interview;
- obtaining a CASA Aviation Reference Number (ARN);
- holding a current, restriction-free CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate at least four weeks before course commencement; and
- holding a current Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).
Important supporting requirements
CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
Applicants must present a valid, restriction-free CASA Class 1 Medical Certificate at least four weeks before course commencement, unless otherwise authorised in writing by Flight One.
Students who have not provided the required medical certificate by this deadline will not be able to commence and may be offered a place in the next available intake.
Students are responsible for maintaining a valid Class 1 Medical Certificate throughout their course. Failure to maintain the required medical certification may result in the suspension or cancellation of enrolment.

Aviation Security Identification Card
To obtain an Australian Aviation Security Identification Card, applicants must successfully complete the required security checks. Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, these may include:
- a national police check;
- an Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission criminal assessment;
- an Australian Security Intelligence Organisation national security assessment; and
- a Department of Home Affairs Visa Entitlement Verification Online check, where applicable.
Applicants with a significant criminal history may not be eligible to hold an ASIC.

A Flight One support letter is required for the ASIC application. Do not begin the application process until Flight One provides the required instructions.

Flight school entry criteria
To receive approval to undertake flight training, applicants must:
- successfully complete the Symbiotics ADAPT pilot aptitude assessment;
- successfully complete a discussion-style interview with the Flight Training Manager; and
- provide an acceptable medical clearance, such as a doctor’s letter confirming good health or a report from a local aviation medical examiner.
CASA requirements
Applicants must be eligible to obtain the CASA documentation and clearances required for their proposed stage of flight training.
- Aviation Reference Number:
an individual
ARN issued by CASA.
- Aviation medical:
a CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate, subject to the international medical arrangements below.
- Security identification:
an Australian Aviation Security Identification Card.
- Aviation English:
CASA Aviation English Language Proficiency certification at a minimum of Level 4. Testing is undertaken during the early stages of the course.
- Other CASA records:
any documentation, clearances, examination results or licences required for the proposed training stage.
Additional international requirements
International admission evidence
International applicants must provide evidence that they have:
- a valid passport;
- no criminal record;
- no prior visa refusals; and
- sufficient funds for the full course fee, living costs and travel to and from Australia.
English-language proficiency
Applicants must provide either:
- a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland; or
- an English-language test completed within the previous year showing:
- IELTS Academic: overall score of at least 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or
- Pearson PTE Academic: overall score of at least 58, with no communicative skill score below 52.
Alternative evidence may be considered case by case. Flight One reserves the right to make reasonable adjustments where sufficient grounds exist.
ASIC applications
An ASIC application requires evidence of an operational need. Flight One provides the required support and application instructions after successful enrolment. Applicants should not begin the ASIC process before receiving these instructions.
ASIC security checks may include a national police check, an Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission criminal assessment, an Australian Security Intelligence Organisation national security assessment and a Department of Home Affairs VEVO check. Applicants with a significant criminal history may not be eligible to hold an ASIC.
Medical requirements for international students
The timing and evidence requirements differ according to whether the applicant is already residing in Australia or applying from overseas.
Applicants residing in Australia
Applicants residing in Australia must complete the full CASA aviation medical process and receive their CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate at least four weeks before course commencement.
Applicants residing outside Australia
Applicants should obtain their CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before commencement wherever possible. This provides the greatest confidence that an unexpected medical issue will not prevent completion of the Commercial Pilot Licence.
An applicant who has not received the certificate by the commencement date may be permitted to begin training, but may need to provide alternative medical clearance and sign additional documentation acknowledging the associated risks.
Medical evidence required before commencement
Preferred evidence
Complete the full CASA aviation medical in your home country, or during a visit to Australia, and obtain the CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before commencing training.
Alternative evidence
Complete a local aviation medical examination to identify any issues that could affect the later CASA medical assessment.
Minimum interim evidence
If neither option is available, complete a thorough examination with a general medical practitioner and obtain a signed letter on the doctor’s letterhead confirming that no medical issues were identified and that the applicant is in good health.

- Medical history: detailed information about past illnesses and conditions, potentially supported by reports from a family doctor or specialist.
- Physical examination: a thorough assessment normally completed by a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner.
- Eye examination: including colour-vision assessment and, where required, further examination by an approved eye examiner or optometrist.
- Audiogram: a hearing test against the applicable aviation standard.
- Electrocardiogram: an assessment of heart health, particularly for applicants over 40.
- Blood and urine tests: tests that may include glucose and lipid assessment.
- Age-related testing: some examinations, including ECGs and audiograms, may be required more frequently according to age.
Important medical information
All international students must present a CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before or during the early stages of training.
A student who elects to commence before receiving the certificate accepts the risk that they may later be unable to satisfy CASA’s medical requirements. If the required certificate cannot be obtained, the student may be excluded from further flight training.
This may affect the student’s enrolment and visa and may result in fees associated with completed or current training phases being non-refundable under Flight One’s Refund Policy.

Diploma Payment Options (Domestic Students)
This course is approved for the Commonwealth Government VET Student Loan scheme with no out of pocket “gap” fee to pay upfront. VSL data is as follows.

If you do not wish to, or are not eligible to use VSL to pay your tuition fees, or have insufficient HELP balance, you are welcome to pay part or all of the Tuition Fee for this qualification directly (self-funding) acording to the instalment schedule on your Letter of Offer. You can mix the use of VET Student Loans and self funded payments.
Additional (Non-Tuition) and Other Fees
There are costs associated with this qualification that are not included in the tuition fees (and therefore, in accordance with ASQA regulations, are not eligible for VET Student Loans cover). It is important to be financially prepared for these costs to reduce the likelihood of disruptions to your training. Costs not covered by the tuition fee may include:
Material Fees ($2,500 approx):
All students are required to pay non-tuition fees. This fee is not for tuition, so it isn’t covered under the VET Student Loan Scheme. The purpose of this fee is to cover all materials that are required to complete the course. All aircraft content (Pilot Operating Handbooks), student training manuals, legislative documents from CASA will all be accessed through SharePoint on your personal iPad, Tablet or Notebook. This will always give you the most up to date content.
Material fees cover various training materials required throughout the course. Payment of material fees is mandatory and enrolment is not confirmed until the material fee payment due prior to commencement has been paid. Material costs MAY CHANGE and various items may need to be added, replaced and/or updated as you move through the course. We provide as much guidance as practicable in relation to non-tuition fees but ultimately it is the trainees responsibility to ensure that all stipulated materials and equipment are acquired and available for training in a timely manner. This fee includes items such as:

Domestic students are required to pay the Material Fee scheduled as follows:

- $1,500 including $500 non-refundable ordering, transport and handling fee five weeks prior to commencement of the course
- $1,000 on commencement of the course when you will receive the balance of your course materials
Flight Lesson Self-Funded Account Balance ($1,500 at commencement)
All students are required to maintain a minimum balance of $1,500 in their Flight One Self-Funded Account throughout their training to cover any remedial training costs and to prevent delays in flight testing and course progression. Students will be expected to pay at initial $1,500 at commencement then top the account up if funds are used. Any funds left over in the Self-Funded Account are refunded at completion.
Other Expenses (Not included in Tuition or Material Fees):
- Pilot Headset: As soon as practicable, pilot trainees will need to purchase, from their preferred supplier, a pilot headset of their choice, preferably in the range of $600 (good quality) to $1,650 (premium quality). Our instructors will assist you to determine the most suitable headset to meet your needs and budget.
- iPad: It is preferred but NOT compulsory for trainees to have their own iPad and AvPlan subscription to support flight navigation. There is no minimum requirement for the device but iPad Mini is more desirable for cockpit ergonomics. The cellular version has a built-in GPS receiver which is a great feature.
- Aviation Medical Examinations: Students commencing this qualification are required to undertake medical examinations specified and regulated by the Australian Civil Aviation Authority (CASA). Students are encouraged to visit CASA’s website here: www.casa.gov.au/licences-and-certificates/aviation-medicals/medical-certificates/classes-medical-certificate for further information about the process and potential costs. Medical examinations are arranged by the student directly. Medical examinations and associated fees are not included in the tuition fees.
- Aviation Security ID Card (ASIC): All students will be required to successfully apply for an ASIC costing approximately $510. This is done through a third party and assistance will be provided during the onboarding stage prior to commencement.
- Remedial Activities: This includes briefings, flights, and other training events that you need to participate in because you have not met the required standard of competency.
- Remedial Flights: Flight lessons that need to be repeated as a result of a competency not being achieved are called Remedial Flights. Trainees should expect that from time to time, remedial flights may be necessary, or may wish to voluntarily repeat a flight. Fees associated with remedial flights will need to be paid at the time of booking. The cost of remedial flights depend on the nature and length of the repeated lesson and can range from $480 to over $2,000 each. It is therefore essential that trainees have some savings or credit set aside for remedial flights to avoid the possibility of training being suspended.
- Repeated Exams: Additional or repeated exams are not included in the tuition fees.
- Flight Training Cancellation Fee: Cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled session leave either an aircraft, an instructor, or both subsequently idle. This results in a delay to your own training and disadvantages our other clients who may have usefully utilised that instructor’s/aircraft’s availability. Should you have to cancel a Briefing, Flight or Simulator session please do so with no less than 24 hours notice prior to the session, otherwise a Cancellation Fee may be charged. The cancellation fee is currently $132.
- Options / Upgrades: Pilot trainees who request additional optional flights, extended flights and/or aircraft upgrades will incur additional fees that are not included in the tuition fees.
- Laptop / Computer: All trainees must have a computer suitable for general classroom study, including accessing the student Learning Management Platform for online learning. There are no specific requirements for the device.
